Længe leve den døde murer (eng: Long live the dead mason) was exhibited at Kunstnernes Hus at my MFA graduation show and consisted of a series of works: Campaigning (Bottle Broadcast) (Video 08:27 min, mason bench), Længe leve den døde murer III (Monument placed in front of entrance of Kunstnernes Hus, bricks, mortar, bottle found in the brick wall of Kunstnernes Hus during a renovation of the cinema) and a series of 4 collages with the titles (from left); Campaigning (Hans Peter Grøn, Sektionsformand for murerne, Internationale), Campaigning (Campaign Manager), Campaigning (Hamlet & Horatio) and Campaigning (Chorus) (Series of 4 collages, paper, gold leaf, varnish, framed in oak).
When and if the masons where not satisfied with the working conditions or didn’t get a topping-out ceremonyit has been a tradition in Scandinavia that they would make “en død murer” (eng: a dead mason). A dead mason is typically a glass bottle placed in between the bricks (Like on Længe leve den døde murer III) so that when the wind echoes through the bottle a haunting sound would occur inside the building. “This ghost” would keep on haunting the building until somebody would track down the bottle and seal it.
